Chapter 33
Well, this chapter has decided it for me: I'm going to go ahead and read more than a chapter each day, though I will keep to my schedule for posting. I won't go into the details until the spoiler section, but I think this is for the best, both for my enjoyment of the story and for allowing the story's pace to better dictate my reading (which will hopefully overcome the issue I've had up until this point). If I do this kind of an analysis again, I don't know how I'll approach it, but I think doing it this way for the last week will help me know if it's a better way to approach it.
On to the spoilers:
Like me, it seems everyone believes the plan is compromised. Probably for the best to be careful in this kind of circumstance, particularly since Kelsier just wiped out the Pits. It doesn't take long for the retaliation to hit, but more on that in a second.
First, I wonder about the brief conversation between Sazed and Vin where she asks him about the legendary 11th metal, of which he had never heard. It's seemed like an innocent conversation, but I wonder if there's more to it than that. I mean, Kelsier has really built up this legend, but perhaps it was simply for morale. Or maybe it's the crux of his secret plan.
Anyway, back to the Lord Ruler's retaliation-- more executions, and this time of Renoux's household. It was a reasonable trap for Kelsier-- I didn't really think beyond the moment until the Inquisitor showed up asking for Vin-- still wondering what that's all about. Maybe they know she's really powerful, or maybe they know who fathered her, or maybe it's something crazy (like the Lord Ruler is actually her father). There's not a lot that's clear yet, though I hope that whatever the answer, it turns out to be well foreshadowed.
I really thought this chapter would have a bit more of a battle, though clearly it's setting up for something big between Kelsier and the Inquisitor. I don't really feel like leaving it here-- like much of what happened in this chapter will feed into the next, so I'm going to go ahead and keep reading. My response to the next chapter tomorrow. Happy reading.
