Mistborn Liveblog 5

Chapter 4

Ah, plans. They always seem so simple when you talk about them, yet so complex in pulling them off. My plan was to blog a chapter of this book a day, and after only a week, I'm just realizing the kind of commitment I've made to time and punctuality. Yeah, I'm hoping my plan comes off better than Kelsier's plan is likely to-- just knowing how heist stories work.

I'm taking Saturday and Sunday off, so I"ll be back with Chapter 5 next Monday.

Spoilers:

Okay, so this meeting was a bit of what I thought it would be, although not quite. We did get to meet the members of the crew, and learn a few more Allomantic powers (Soothe, Riot-- got an official name, forcepush, smoking, and strength. That's five of eight). Also we learned of two high-metals. I'm hoping they've got some pretty cool powers for Allomancy. I couldn't help but think about the Atium that the crew plans to steal -- it's some kind of super rare metal, and it's got to have some implications for the magic system. In fact, it's that part that intrigues me most right now.

Atium is even more intriguing than this eleventh metal that Kelsier broke out, the legendary metal that will kill the Lord Ruler. I don't blame him for not trying to burn even a sliver of it yet, 'cause you don't know how much will be needed to get the job done. But if it were me, I'd be hugely tempted to run a test, just on a flake, so that I know what I'm supposed to do with it. Of course, maybe it consumes the Allomancer in the process. It's unlikely from the tone of the book that the ending will be quite so dark, but with Kelsier being the wise sage and Vin the main character and up-and-coming trainee, I could see Kelsier dying as he tries to kill the Lord Ruler. Maybe Vin's the one who actually gets to use the eleventh metal and finish the job.

The trouble so far is that we didn't get to see even the beginnings of the plan. Most heist leaders have the plan in place, but Kelsier only explains the goals, and that they need to figure out the details. I don't know how much of those details I'll get to see, but I won't mind so long as the execution of the plan and story turn out good.

See you next week. Happy reading.
