Mistborn Liveblog 4

Chapter 3

It's getting a bit harder to think about writing this section of the liveblog without spoilers. I imagine the deeper in I get, the less there will be that's spoiler-free. Let's just say that I'm starting to see some Star Wars imagery; I'm just hoping the eqivalent of midichlorians don't show up-- or if they do, it'll be a bit better than how Lucas did it.

Spoilers:

With this chapter we finally get to see Camon at his worst. He gets pretty abusive with Vin, throwing a stool, striking her several times. I really thought when Kelsier showed up that he'd give the man a harsher treatment. A bit of pushing and then telling Milev to deal with him-- making him a beggar. It just doesn't seem to hold much for me. Of course, it'll be nice if Camon shows up again later, maybe he's gotten in with the Ministry and is helping them hunt Vin down? There's some clear motive right there.

I was hoping that we'd get to know a bit more about Allomancy-- more than just the tidbits that Kelsier told Vin. Really, he said very little about Allomancy itself, focusing most on the types of people who can use it and that most can only burn one metal, and a rare few can burn them all. What I want to know is what the others do-- I've seen three so far: soothing, enraging, and some kind of force-push.

I didn't care much for the Test part. Yeah, I know it's an essential step in knowing if Vin is a Misting or Mistborn, and I'd rather read it as a blatant test that all the characters recognize than some hidden-away challenge that's there to only serve the purpose of the test and adds little to the actual story. So there were some redeeming points about this Test-- and it was quick-- but I just didn't care for that part.

So, we're going to have a meeting soon. I'm guessing it's either going to be the "meet the team" meeting or it'll be that plus the "here's the plan" meeting. I'm hoping there's a bit more character development before we get to the plan-- or that we'll get a "here's what we need" and start to go get it. Yeah, I'm just thinking in terms of heist movies like the Ocean's films. I'd love to see a new format if Brandon's got one, though.

Happy reading

Jameson
