Chapter 2

I'm glad to see the story has picked up. Brandon's descriptions of the city are excellent. He notes just enough detail to build a picture but leaves a lot of the periphery to the reader. My favorite was how he referred to the ash stains on the sides of buildings as dripping paint on a canvas. So few words, yet so vivid a picture.

The story is starting to grow on me now-- there's been some tense moments and some witty banter between friends. Plus the world is filling out nicely. Also, I'm glad to see that Kelsier is back. Yay!

On to the spoilers...

I'm really glad Vin's arc and Kelsier's arc are crossing so early in the story. When I was reading the beginning of this chapter with Kelsier and Dockson talking about their crew for some big job (now this is probably the crew for robbing the Lord Ruler-- much better than the Camon's crew)-- I started to get concerned that I was going to have to keep so many similar characters straight. There was the crew Kelsier was building, with lots of currently unimportant names dropped, and then there's Camon's crew with Vin and Ulef and others. I didn't want to try to track two different crews, so it's nice to see the crossing so early in the story.

The meeting with Vin, Camon and the High Prelan-- I loved that scene. Vin was pretty overbearing with her worry, which really made me think something was going to happen, but when they got away, I was thinking "Well, Brandon did overplay the worry to make sure I was thinking along the same lines as Vin, so getting out scott-free was a nice touch.

Not that they really got away, as Kelsier learns. And hey, some more introduction into Allomancy. I can't wait until we get the speech of how it works, probably from Kelsier to Vin. My sister and her husband really built up the magic system as something really unique. So far, I'm liking it, but I know there's a lot of missing pieces, like exact powers, limitations, etc.

Oh, and it was great to see that Kelsier noticed how Camon had been treating Vin, and drop a hint of bad things to come for that guy-- but what?

Back tomorrow. Happy reading.
