Chapter 20

Today's post is going to be short. I've been thinking about character foils recently, and I've been trying to identify them in this book. At first, I thought Dockson was Kelsier's foil, but I'm not so sure any more. I think there's a better foil in a different character. Vin's got her brother's voice as a foil, but I'm starting to wonder if there's some part of her and Kelsier that are foils of each other. I've not found it yet-- Kelsier having a far more direct and powerful foil-- but I'd really like to see it.

On to some spoilers:

Kelsier's foil-- I'm going with Marsh. From what I learned about him in this chapter, I think he's a far better foil-- particularly with their different approaches for their anger.

Easily the most interesting part of this chapter is what Marsh teaches Vin about Allomancy. I actually like that he's the one that told her more about the structure (the nicely organized structure) of Allomancy. Were this information to come from Kelsier, as he has been the 'teacher' character to this point, it still would have fit, but may have left some wondering how he came to know so much in the few years since he Snapped. Marsh is a far more fitting and convincing character for this because he Snapped younger and has more time to learn. Vin also got a chance to voice my question about why Marsh knew so much about all the metals if he really only works with one. I don't know I fully accept the answer he gave-- my guess is of any Misting, those with the power to detect Allomancy in use need to know the most about all the metals, so they can best identify them.

Happy reading.
