Mistborn Liveblog 15

Chapter 14

As it inevitably does and rightly should, the valley of the last chapter gave way to the crest and peak of this chapter. There is more action and intensity than any chapter to this point. In fact, this chapter was the first with any real sense of peril for me. I'm pretty glad for that, considering how much planning and such has filled the book to this point. I think it's high time for some action.

With this being the end of another week, I'm left to reflect some on my progress with this so far. It's getting easier than I thought it would, and I'm really enjoying it. Sure, there's not many readers at this point, but that's fine with me. I'm focusing on learning what I can to assist my own craft. True, it's becoming less of a liveblog and more of a readers journal, but I think that's okay with me. Having begun this, I'm not sure how feasible it would be to actually liveblog a book, but this format so far works for me.

Spoilers:

Before I jump into the actual chapter, I'm reminded that again I've been neglecting the small intro parts to each chapter. I've still not made heads or tails of the story it's creating, but it seems to be something only tangentially related to the story at hand. There are references to the defeating the Deepness, though Vin states that the Lord Ruler did that already. Also, there are references to Terrismen, of which we have only actually met the steward. I'm sure it will fit together by the end, just as long as I remember to write about it.

So, the action in this chapter is the first time we really see the power of the Inquisitors, when Vin and Kelsier run into them while invading the Lord Ruler's castle. Just prior to that, Vin kills a few guards and we learn that it was the first time she killed anyone-- I was taken aback by her nonchalance about it. Yeah, she considers it a moment in wannabe shock, and then the action resumes. I don't know how someone would actually respond, but I would think the shock would be a bit worse, even for someone who lives in the underground. I'm hoping that Vin revisits it again later in the next valley section.

After some Atium in action and discovering that the Inquisitors have their own supply of it, Vin narrowly escapes and then is saved from pursuit by someone that she seems to recognize, but we don't know who. During the chapter, Kelsier seems to be captured, although we never actually see it and I can't help but think it's he who is the mysterious stranger who saves Vin at the end of the chapter. The only other person I could think of would be the Venture boy (Vin is on a noble house's rooftop when she is saved), but I doubt that. I think it must be Kelsier-- who else would risk saving someone from an Inquisitor.

I guess I'll have to wait to find out. More next week. Happy reading.
